We are going to come into Austria from Venice in July. We'll have about a week. What ideas do you have that we must see, aside from Vienna. We want to see some of the cities, but also scenery. Don't think we'll have a car. Any ideas are appreciated (and we travel rick Steves style - fast and light). Thanks
Hi Doreen,
These are some of our favorite Austrian places:
Salzburg, Zell am See, Heiligenblut, Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Baden bei Wien, Gosau See (the lake) but in no particular order. All are easily reached by train, except Heiligenblut and Gosau See. These you can reach by Postbus - a comfortable and reasonable way to travel by the way. At Hallstatt railway station, all trains are met by a motor launch which ferries you across Lake Hallstatt to the town (an incredibly beautiful place - and inhabited continuously the last 4,000 years). Gute Reise! P.
Stay in Carinthia for a day or two. Especially Velden at Lake Wörthersee is very nice, very pretty. The mountain scenery is especially great to view from Lake Faakersee. That part of Carinthia is like a lake district. It's only a 5 or 10 minutes drive from lake to lake...
Thanks for the warning about singing doe, etc. We'll start practicing.
If you had to choose one village that was picturesque Austrian and easily accessible from any of the larger cities such as Vienna, which would it be. We won't have a car.
Also, any recommendations for trusty travel agents in Austria that speak English??
Thanks
