What's the objective? Avoid the cost of accommodations in the city? I've done that twice by staying in Freilassing, Germany, which is right across the river from Salzburg, an 8-12 min (€2,10) trip by regional train or S-Bahn from the Salzburg Hbf. Last time I was there, I stay at Hotel Rupertus. It's an older building from the outside, but clean and well maintained inside with modern bathrooms, and a double room is €55, a triple €80, with a nice breakfast buffer. About a block away is a bus stop with twice hourly buses that will take you in 23 min to the old town in Salzburg.
if you find the old town area expensive you can try the new town area. jus walk across the bridge, not very far at all. or, i found a place run by the church (RS book has it) just around the cornor from the church under the hill, it's the cheapest in the old town area. very small bed and room, but great location.
We've stayed on the Moosstrasse, too, with Helga Bankhammer. Her info is in Rick's book. She has a small farm, that's why we stayed out there.
Stayed at Haus Ballwein: www.haus-ballwein.at It's about a 15 minute bus ride into the city. It's also on Moosstrasse. She has small apartments that accommodate more people.
