Been to Europe but never to Austria. Planning a week's stay based in Vienna. Is there enough to do there for a weeK? Or should my wife and I plan a lot of side trips?
ps--we like to see sights but mixed with reasoanble time to relax.

Vienna kept me busy for six days but I spend a lot of time in museums and just wandering. It really depends upon your interests. Salzburg makes a nice day trip, or Melk,or you could day trip on the Danube to Bratislava.

Agree that it makes sense to split your time between Vienna and Salzburg. If it were me, I'd do 4 days in Vienna and then 3 days in Salzburg with a day trip (or even an overnight) to St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang on Wolfgangsee. If you won't have a car, there is a bus you can take from Salzburg to St. Gilgen in less than an hour, then you can take a boat across the lake to St. Wolfgang. Gorgeous scenery.
