Austria/Dolomites

We are planning a trip with one week in the Dolomites and one week in Austria. Our primary goal will be easy to moderate hiking in day trips. We've been to Selva Val Gardena in the Dolomites, loved it, and would like to go back to the Dolomites, just a different location. The other week would be in Austria. Do you have a suggestion for a hiking location in the Dolomites where it would be relatively easy to drive to Austria for some additional hiking? Any suggestions for an Austria location? Any suggestions for the easiest way to do this......i.e., take a train, rent a car (not sure if trains are even a possibility)? Thanks for any help!

This link may be of help. Some good input from Lola and Paul in reply to a Dolomite inquiry.

I am not a hiker but Austria offers lots of hiking opportunities. The beautiful little town of Heiligenblut sits below the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak, and has a picturesque little church just waiting for people to take a photo of it. Although a small town the views are great. A worthwhile day trip would be to take the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and eat at the Panorama Restaurant at the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hohe with a close up view of the Grossglockner peak and the Pasterze glacier. You could do some hiking up there.

If you are leaving the Dolomites to go to Austria it is a beautiful drive. We drove from Bolzano to Heiligenblut and stopped by a mountain stream along the way for a relaxing and cheap picnic lunch. A car would be a great way to do these areas but the drop off charge into a different country from pickup would be significant. If you are flying out of the same country that you flew into then you could avoid that charge with the pu and drop off being in the same country.

Hi Barbara,

I'd suggest staying in Alta Badia in the Dolomites. Our favorite place is the Ciasa Montanara in La Villa, Alta Badia.

There are so many beautiful areas in Austria, but one we visited for the first time last Sept., the Zillertal, is now tops on our long list. We loved our short stay in Finkenberg at the Gaestehaus Bergland.

A rental car would be the way to go in these areas (IMO).

These "trip reports" we wrote may be of help and/or of interest to you. They both include Austria and the Dolomites:

Hope this helps.

We rode motorcycles for one week through western Austria, northeastern Italy and western Switzerland. Fantastic scenery/beauty.
