austria and germany travel in September/07

My husband and I are arriving in Vienna September 3 and wanted to spend a few days there - travel to Salzburg - spend 2 or 3 days there and travel to Germany - Munich - Augsberg, Baden to Saarbrucken for September 13 and meeting an Air Force Group for an organized tour.

Any help here would be appreciated - there are no accommodations in Vienna - so I guess we spend no time there - some convention...

I think I would prefer travelling by car but the drop off fees are very expensive.

I am 59 and my husband is 63. So hostels are out.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

For Vienna, try: http://www.apartment.at/index_eng.php3
Very reliable apt service that should be able to accommodate you. We use it on every trip. Most have a min 3 day stay, but for a wonderful city like Vienna 3 days is not enough. I would recommend shaving days off from Salzburg, which can be seen easily in one day, and add the extra to Vienna.

For hotels also check with www.hrs.de (they've got availabilities even when the hotels themselves are sold out, they buy allotments). For rental cars: Pick-Up the car in Vienna, drive all the way to Salzburg, drop it off at Salzburg's train station, take regional train to Freilassing, Bavaria (about 8 minutes ride, just over €1 per person) and pick up a new car from e.g. Sixt (www.sixt.com) who've got a station there and then drive to Saarbrücken where you can drop off free of charge (or Frankfurt airport)...

Thank you Alex and Andreas for your replies. I am jumping into these sites ... hope I find something!

Is anyone ever worried about using a credit card on the internet to book hotels and cars..? Obviously I have not done this before.

Anything I should know before I try this??

Thanks guys for your help.
