Thinking about spending a couple of nights in Augsburg during our Rhine/Romantic Road travels. Rick doesn't have any hotels listed in his 2008 book (I know, need to get a new one), and wonder if anyone can recommend one.
Thanks!

Monica, go to www.augsburg.de. Then click on "Tourismus", then "Tourism- and Hotelservice", then on "Übernachten", "Alle Unterkünfte".
When I did the Romantic Road, Augsburg was too big for me. I stayed at Augsburger Hof (coincidence) in Landsberg am Lech.
First rule of travel in Germany: get another book besides Rick Steves' guide. Although he gives a good overview of many areas, for such a large country as Germany, there are simply too many geographical omissions.
The lure is location. While we have been to Munich before, we want to stop in for a day again before heading to Salzburg; but don't want to pay the over inflated prices due to Oktoberfest starting the following Saturday.
Hi Monica, my recollection is that next to Rothenburg, Augsburg was the most interesting town on the Romantic Road. I had not yet settled on the Steves books and was using Fodors. They have an extensive walking tour and it is well worthwhile. We did not stay there, so I have no specific suggestions. However, I will say that for 4 three week trips covering everywhere from London to Prague, I have found tripadvisor.com to be invaluable, and never misleading. I have always been able to balance comfort, breakfast, and cost to my satisfaction.
Thanks David! I also use Trip Advisor as my sanity check point and bump Rick's suggestions against TA.
"We ... don't want to pay the over inflated prices due to Oktoberfest".
If all you want is a place to stay where you can avoid the high prices, I stayed at Augsburger Hof in Landsberg on the last Saturday night of Octoberfest in 2007, and I only got charged their normal rate. It's less than an hour by train from the Munich Hbf, although it is not in the MVV (Munich metro district) so you have to take regular trains into Munich. Some places within the district, for which you could use a Gesamtnetz Parter Tageskarte: Herrsching (near Andechs), Starnberg, and Tutzing. Holzkirchen is also on the S-Bahn from Munich and also served by faster trains. To get to Salzburg from Holzkirchen, it's faster to go to Rosenheim via Bad Aibling than back through Munich.
