ATM cash amounts

We're heading out next week on the Berlin, Prague, and Vienna tour. In the past I remember a maximum withdrawal amount. Can someone tell me the max that can be taken fom ATMs in these countries? Also, slightly unrelated, do we need Czech currency there rather than Euros? Thanks!

I don't know that there is a standard maximum in any country. The ATM will tell you its maximum. What is more important is YOUR maximum with your bank. If you think you will need more in a day than your current limit, ask to have it raised for the duration of your trip. If you have, say, a $600 limit and the ATM only gives $300, just do two transactions or go to another ATM. If your travel companion carries a card for the same account you can each take the maximum, too.

Nancy is correct. There are no automatic limits on single withdrawn from ATMs in any country. That is solely determined by the owner of the ATM. And there is really no way to know in advance. The big limit is your bank's limit in a 24 hour period. So check with your bank. It is always smart to use the local currency when in any country. You can use Euro in Czech but the exchange rate could be and probably would be to your disadvantage.

Most of my bank ATM accounts have $500/day limit and I have never had a problem getting the equivalent in Euro. If the individual machines had a limit, it was more.

Some ATM's will have a lower limit than your bank's daily limit. I'm not sure I've ever run into it, however. You really won't know until you start using an ATM. If you do run into it, you can either abandon that machine and find another (good idea if your bank charges you a per transaction fee) or make multiple withdrawals that day.

Worked in banking--a limit is a limit. You can't step around it by going to 2 ATMs or doing 2 transactions. Just check with your branch as to what the limit is & adjust prior to your trip. Be sure to call them as well & give them trip info before leaving so they don't freeze your card.

As we have frequently discussed even in this posting, there are two limits -- the limit imposed by your bank/card issuer and the limit imposed by the ATM itself. You can easily step around the ATM limit by doing multi withdraws.
