Atlantic Coast of France

Planning a trip to Nantes, La Rochelle, Cognac, and Bourdeaux. Would anyone care to share hotel recommendations/experiences -- Rick is slim on this geographic area. Also, would appreciate knowing experiences on vineyard tours/tasting via commercial providers in Bourdeaux area? Thanks so much for your time!

Last summer, our son and his wife stayed on Ile de Re, near La Rochelle, and loved Hotel Clos de Saint Martin. Most tourists were French, a few Brits. Bike rentals were plentiful on the island. In Bordeaux (but 10 years ago), we stayed at Hotel Acanthe; a great bargain and location-it still has good reviews on TripAdvisor. Two doors down the street is La Marmiotte, such a great experience we ate there twice-and weren't disappointed. We did a vineyard tour through the Tourist Office-no further details remembered. Happy travels. Mike

We stayed in a nice Mercure near La Rochelle. I can check the name if you are interested. We really liked it. It is not in La Rochelle but just south along the coast. I would also suggest looking at the Logis brand hotels. We frequently use them. They are a smaller, privately owned hotels affiliated with the Logis brand. We did stay on Ile d'Oleron but it wasn't what we really wanted. I think Ile de Re is supposed to be much nicer.

I recommend Hotel Tour l'Intendance in Bordeaux. Highlights in Bordeaux were the market (think it was Sunday) along the river, dinner at La Tupina, wine tastings in town (no particular name stands out), the city park/garden. We didn't have a car and did a day trip to St Emilion through the TI. Wasn't crazy about St Emilion but know I am in the minority. We then took the train to Arcachon and had a couple of nights on Cap Ferret.
