Does anyone have any pointers on where to stay in Asurias? We are flying into Oviedo and visiting the area for 3 days. My grandfather was born here and hoping to find exactly where he lived. How far is the aiport in Oviedo to hotels? Any recommendations as to best location to stay at? Anything about Asturias would be helpful for our travels. We will be there in September.

Unless I've lost my mind, the Asturias airport (which sometimes carries the monicker of Oviedo) is up on the coast maybe fifty kilometers from Oviedo. Peidras Blancas is a couple miles from the aiport and has two or three small hotels, but it's pretty dismal for the average tourist. Aviles, about five miles away, is a bit bigger and fairly interesting, but still way the hell off the tourist track.

I love, love, love Asturias! It is mountainous, green and gorgeous all year around (never gets scorchy hot and brown, like further south). Oviedo is a nice university town with some interesting public sculpture - and Woody Allen owns a home there. One town you might consider staying in is Gijon, on the coast, Aviles is nice, too. I stayed in a casa rural (like a small family-run hotel) in the mountains outside of Mieres, in a town called Cenera. Just a short distance up the hill was a four-star hotel, too, but I don't know the name.
