Aschaffenburg local transport and garni or pension

I hope that Lee and Jo are able to help with this one (or other folk). We hope to be in Aschaffenburg this weekend for their craft fest and hope we can find a small place to stay nearby. We are doing this trip completely differently than our usual highly planned version, driving the Fachwerksrasse and then making our way east before turning for home. We have also decided that if possible we will avoid chains and try to avoid large hotels. If we make this trip work then we will do this style again. I'm not sure where the Land boundary is around there - I would assume Aschaffenburg is in RMV, but I wonder if its actually Bayern, or is it maybe a border town? Lee, I can't remember your url so I could find this myself. Thanks in advance.

Aschaffenburg is in Bavaria, so you can use a Bayern ticket if you are traveling in Bavaria anyway. If you are coming from Frankfurt, you can get a ticket from the RMV though. Direct Regional trains are 10.70 € per person, run about once an hour and take about 45 min. The RMV ticket machines at the airport and Hauptbahnhof are all touch screen now, switch to English and you can use the same machine for either Deutsche Bahn tickets or RMV tickets. Just touch the red DB on the bottom right corner of the screen and it will switch to RMV The old town area is only 10 min. walk from the station, which was being renovated when I was there a couple of months ago. Should be almost done. I saw some pretty little gasthouses around the market square area where the Palace and Basilica are located. We had lunch in a little soup and sandwich place near there too that was just perfect. Do tour the castle museum. The cork monument collection is outstanding. The Pompineaum is also next to this. The Basilica is stunning inside. All of this was once the property of the Arch Bishop of Mainz. I don't know any names of B&B's or guest houses, but you might want to check over there on TA as I think one of the DE's is from around there. She knows a lot about Würzburg too, as she helped restore it. Near-by is Seligenstadt, one of my favorites. The Abbey is the largest, best preserved in Hessen. Easy to get to by train, in Hessen but on the border to Bavaria. Will you be visiting Büdingen or Idstein?

Nigel, before you go to a commercial booking site, try the hotel list on the Aschaffenburg website, www.info-aschaffenburg.de/hotel-und-gastronomie. The site gives both email address, and, if they have one, their website URL. Unfortunately, it's only in German, but some of the properties have websites in English. "Stadtbereich" is in town, "Umland" is in the vacinity. I found more places on the hotel site than I did for Pensionen. Aschaffenburg is in Bavaria, but it is in a "transition" area for RMV, that is, RMV sells tickets from the Frankfurt area to Aschaffenburg. The Bahn doesn't compete with them, so you won't find those fares on the DB site, but you can find fares from elsewhere in Germany to Aschaffenburg. For someone going from Frankfurt to places further into Bavaria, I often tell them to get a Bayern-Ticket and an RMV ticket from Frankfurt to Kahl am Main (€7,30), which is the first stop in Bavaria, before Aschaffenburg, for many trains.

We stayed at the Hotel/Cafe Fischer twice. Rooms are large and the breakfast is good. It neither an old Gasthaus nor a chain. It seems to get commercial customers. The staff is business-like but friendly. They do not all speak English if that matters. It is located about half way between the train station and the palace. We would stay there again. We have had decent meals at Uwe's Bistro and a restaurant called Theater Klause. We made room reservations through hrs.com. Regards, Gary

I asked one of my friends who lived in Aschaffenburg for a long time before moving to Frankfurt last year and he said he would recommend the "Wilde Man". Come back and let us know what you picked out and how you liked the town.

Gary, HRS shows 6 hotels in town; aschaffenburg.de shows those 6 and 10 more - 16 vs 6. HRS also shows 3 places in the vacinity ( Umland); aschaffenburg.de shows 37 - two of those shown by HRS and 35 more. HRS shows one place not shown on Aschaffenburg.de. Town websites almost always give you more choices.

Hi, Nigel - The Main Perle (aka Fischer's Main Perle) is well located and not expensive at all - breakfast is included, and it's close to the castle. Enjoy!
