ascension day and VE Day in Paris

Hello. Does anyone know what type of closings to expect on Ascension Day in Paris? It's a Thursday this year and we'll be staying in an apartment, but just wondering what to expect to do or not do that day. Is it a big deal as far as store/sight closings? What about VE Day? I read a post somewhere that says that some things are still open since it's a national holiday and it's a tourist weekend(Saturday)so wondering what to expect that day as well. Any experience?

I am not sure if anything has changed in the past 14 years, but I arrived in Paris on VE Day of 1995 which was the 50 year anniversary of this event. You would think that there would have been a great celebration in Paris as there was in London and Moscow that day. To me it just looked like any other day in Paris. I read that the liberation of Paris is more meaningful to the residents. Bottom line: nothing was different on May 8, 1995.

Have not been there for those holidays, but was just there on May 1 (Labor day for Europe). Most museums and public buildings were closed. There are some museums that are open on holidays, smaller ones so they may be crowded. Check the local papers or guides to verify. Restaurants seemed to be open. Our local grocery store was open in the morning, but appeared to close early that day. Same for the patissiere we went to. So if you want prepared food, buy early in the day. Otherwise, holidays can be a great time to just wander. Shops are often open. Enjoy

Natalie, my sister and I were in Paris for 2 weeks in May of 2008. To my surprise, VE day is just another day, as the French feel that it was the underground movement and not the allies who liberated Paris. Or so I was told by a Parisian. Most of the younger generations had no clue what VE Day is!!!!! C'est la Vie! If you are there for VE day, go to the Arch de Triumph. There is a ceremony there with bands and men in funny hats. Politicians will make speeches (though I couldn't understand them) and they will lay a wreath at the eternal flame. It was all very cool and I felt as if my dad were standing beside me. While you are there be sure to check out the view from the top of the Arch...its amazing!!!!!! I'm so jealous. I adore Paris!!!!! Every girl should go at least once in her life and just stay put. Let the city cast her spell and you will never want to leave!!!!!!
