We will be traveling home from Frankfurt on January 5. We are interested in spending two nights before we come home in a town that has artists' studios-- glass works, pottery, wood crafts, etc.
We would like a town not more than two hours from Frankfurt since we are flying out of Frankfurt.

You might try looking in Kronberg. This small town sits in the Taunus mountains just north of Frankfurt, so only about 22 min. away by S-bahn.
Kronberg has been known as an artists colony since the 1800's. I can't really say what kind of workshops are around there, but it is beautiful up there and if there is snow, it will be even prettier.

There is the famous http://www.hoechster-porzellan.de/ in a suburb of Frankfurt that can even be reached by tram. Höchst has got a beautiful riverfront and the china manufacture - and a medieval market square, a baroque castle... I recommend staying at the Lindner Congress Hotel simply for location.
