We arrive on BA in Munich at 15:35 how much time to get through customs and getting to main train station . Trying to figure which train to take to Salzburg. Most trains leave from 1705 to 1810. And last have train tickets from Salzburg to Mestre Italy after our 3 day stay in Salzburg. Question is forgot to reserve a seat on train is this train normally full or will we be able to find seat got a first class tickets when on sale.
If you're willing to take the S-Bahn from the airport to Muenchen Ost and a regional train from there to Salzburg, you don't need to plan ahead. Buy a Bayern-Ticket at the airport train station (€22.00 for the first person and €4.00 for each additional person). Leave the airport at 16:04, 17:04, or 18:04 to connect with a regional train departing Muenchen Ost at 16:42, 18:00, or 18:55, respectively. Your Bayern-Ticket will be good on any S-Bahn and on any regional train.
Are you not even staying in Munich 1 night??? It's a beautiful city with lots of interesting sights and areas. Traveling from Munich to Salzburg is quite easy, but Munich (in my mind) is much more interesting and fun that tourist-riddled Salzburg.
Staying in Munich on the way back one night. And thanks for info. Now since we have tickets for train from Salzburg to Mestre do we need a reservation or will they be seats for us to have. I remember that on one of Ricks shows he had ticket on train but no reservation so he just looked for open car.
To avoid confusion, the train you want to take to the Ostbahnhof (east station) will be the S8, and it will probably say it is going to Herrsching (which is usually the final destination). Both S-Bahn go to the Ostbahnhof, but the S8 takes the short route to the east of Munich and stops in Ostbahnhof before going through town and on to Herrsching. The S1 says it is going to Ostbahnhof (its final destination), but goes the long way around to the west to the Hauptbahnhof before going through town to Ost. The S8 leaves from the airport on track (Gleis) 2, which is the left hand track if you are coming from Terminal 2. There is an S8 leaving from the airport every 20 min., but the regional train only goes from Ost to Salzburg every hour. I would take the first S8 to Ostbahnhof and wait there for the regional train. Added: You might want to explain the train to Maestre for which you have tickets. I think there is a night train that goes all the way from Salzburg to Venice, and you should have reservations for a night train. Austrian Rail day connections from Salzburg to Venice use a bus from Villach, and reservations for the bus part come with tickets. Although there are several ECs per day going from Munich to Verona via Innsbruck, only one continues on to Venice, and you would still have to go from Salzburg to Rosenheim on another train to catch it.
Thank you first time taking the train there and first time to europe.
