Our flight gets in around 8 am and we will have only carry on luggage. I see that the train takes 15-20 minutes from the airport to Centraal Station. We'd like to buy 2 day disposable OV chipcards and I see that the GVB counters don't open until 10 am on Saturday. It seems like we could be there around 9:30 and I don't want to wait around. My son is arriving the day before the rest of us. Could he just pick up the disposable OV chipcards for all of us when he arrives on Friday?

Duh....You're absolutely right, you won't be able to use the machines with magnetic strip cards....my bad. There's another option available at the Tourist office at Schipol Airport. They sell disposable cards with unlimited multiple day passes which include the train ride to/from Cenraal Station to the airport. They cost slightly more of course and can only be purchased at the airport.

Thanks, Michael. I had heard about those passes but we are going on to Belgium after Amsterdam and won't be going back to the airport.

Your son should be able to purchase cards for you the day before. Disposable cards are also available for purchase from tram drivers, and at machines located at the Metro Station beneath Centraal Station.

Great, thanks! I was concerned that we wouldn't be able to use the machines with our no chip/PIN American credit cards. And I read somewhere that you can only buy the one day cards on the tram not the multi-day ones. I'll just have him purchase for us the day before.
