Arnhem Open-Air Folk Museum (Openluchtmuseum)

My wife and I are in our early 60's and plan to visit the Arnhem Open-Air Folk Museum (Openluchtmuseum) on Sunday, April 29, 2012. While I know that the amount of time in the museum will vary with our interests, etc., what is everyone's best guess as to how long we will want to spend there, ignoring travel to/from Arnhem?

I'm not Dutch, didn't find it boring, enjoyed the trams and pancake restaurant (a particularly good one) and the film. We spent a long half day there. We are a similar age to you, were about 10 years younger when we did it. Nearly went back this Spring but the time didn't work out when I fell down.

First, I LOVE open air museums! We were there about 4 hours, including a leisurely lunch, and I could have stayed much longer! We only hit about half the places, but we did take the train around twice! I was with a couple in their 60s, I'm early 50s. I guess it depends how much you like these type of museums!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this museum and spent over half a day there. We were with some Dutch friends who were showing us around so we went at their pace although we would have spent about the same amount of time had we done the site by ourselves. If you go into one of the old Dutch homes notice how short the beds were back then (1800's or early 1900's if I remember correctly). Those beds would never work now since the Dutch people on average are so tall. If you have an interest in WWII there are a number of sites close by that you would want to visit. The Robert Frost Bridge ("A Bridge Too Far" if you saw the movie") and the Airborne Museum Hartenstein, The Commonwealth War Cemetery and other memorials dedicated to the events of Operation Market Garden, the failed attempt by the allies to cross the Rhine into Germany in hopes of ending the war by Christmas of '44. Arnhem is worth a couple of days if you have such an interest in those things. You will enjoy the Open air museum if that is all you have time for.

anywher from 2 to 6 hours. You can combine a visit with the Kroller-Muller museum nearby, if you are into art.

Ah, its an old thread. I was reading the answers and came across mine from last year. Well, for the variation from today, and to wake up Richard whose trip now approaches, no I think that the trip and the Open Air Museum take up far too much time to also include Utrecht. Just the railway museum in Utrecht, or the Nationaal Museum van Speelkolk tot Pierement can take most of a day. Maybe YMMV if you prefer to drive by more than me.

Good catch Nigel. Did not even notice it was an old thread.
