We are landing in Nice (Tues) and staying in Arles thru Sat/Sun this summer. I plan to rent a car in Provence. We then plan to go to Barcelona on either Sat or Sun, stay until Tues and return to US on Wed. Should we train from Provence to Barcelona? Is it a hassle renting in France and "returning" a car in Spain?

Two years ago we did the same route...what we decided to do is drop off our Car in Montpellier and do a night there. Catch the morning train that is direct to Barcelona
and for the record I loved Montpellier.

You most likely would have a large fee to pick a car up in one country and return in another.
