Arles Accommodations

My wife and I are going to France in May (see also Paris Accommodations) and would like to stay in Arles for about 3 nights. I think it would be best to stay in town, but it was also suggested that we get something out of town. We are looking for something reasonable. Any suggestions?

Stayed at the Hotel Calendal right beside the Roman Arena back in 2006- I do see from time to time people still refer this hotel. Was quite reasonable back then- extra for breakfast. If you decide on this hotel ask if the Cricket restaurant up the street is still operating. It is small - reservations should be made and Oh la la the food was supberb.Easy walking distance around the town as well from the hotel.

Jeremy -My wife and I stayed at Hotel Regence this August. Liked it very much: clean, modern, and quiet rooms, and great breakfast. Reasonable too - I think we paid 65 euro/night. It's located on the bank of the Rhone just inside the city gates on the north. Plenty of free parking on nearby Place Lamartine. Within the old city itself, but handy for quick get-aways.

I second the Hotel regence. The hotel was very pleasant...clean modern rooms and very good beds.... the staff friendly and helpful, and the location was excellent. The railway station is an easy 5 minute walk; a large Monoprix is 3 minutes walk away; there is a laundromat around the corner as well as numerous cafes; the Place du Forum is a 10 minute walk. The only thing in Arles that is a bit of walk from the Regence is the Ancient History Museum....but if you break the walk by stopping for a drink in a cafe, its not so bad. Parking is easy, the views (the river and an old medieval city wall) are charming, and you are close to the edge of town so driving up to the Pont du Gard, for instance, is easy. I wouldn't want to drive any closer into Arles...the streets are quite narrow

Last September, we stayed at the historic Hotel d’Arlatan, 26 Rue de Sauvage. Within the old city, but a short walk to the train station (10-15 minutes). Close to all the main sights, many restaurants and shopping. We had one of the terrace rooms with a large balcony overlooking the pool. Has parking (for a fee) and breakfast (not included). I believe we paid about $200 a night.

It's nice to stay in town (we like Le Calendal) so you can walk to the sights, dinner, the market, etc. We enjoyed splitting a Provence visit between Arles, where we toured the town and the nearby sights (ie the Pont du Gard), and a tiny hill town in eastern Provence, where it was easy to get in our car and tour sights in the country (ie wineries, hill towns of the Luberon).

Jeremy,

I was in Arles in June and stayed at Le Calendal. The room was very comfortable, the breakfasts were good and the staff were fantastic. They have complimentary internet facilities next to the Bar (although these are often in use by other guests, so it's necessary to choose your time).

It's in a great location for walking to restaurants as well as the historic sites such as the Roman Amphitheatre.

Happy travels!

Here's another vote for Hotel Regence. We paid only 45 euros 2 years ago in September. It's the only place we'd stay if we go back to Arles. The manager, Eric, was very nice. If you wish I'd be happy to email pics to you of the hotel and the area.

We stayed at D'Arlatan 2 years ago and really liked it. It's built over a Roman basilica, and has a section of glass floor in the lobby where you can look down at the ruins below the hotel. The staff were very helpful, it was clean and classy, we were able to walk everywhere, and there were several Rick recommended restaurants nearby.

Jeremy,

My husband and I stayed at Hotel du Musee in Arles back in 2007. www.hoteldumusee.com. It was not expensive. The hotel houses some art exhibitions, which were interesting. We loved our experience there - it's located in the heart of the historic district. The building dates back to the 16/17 century, and despite the building's age (a feature we appreciated), the facilities were excellent. The hotel was clean and we had comfortable beds. The owners are welcoming, they speak perfect English, and I remember we had a nice breakfast on a lovely terrace. I can't remember if breakfast was included. The hotel owners also had great recommendations for dinner (excellent fish). Our room had a view to the street down below, and we could also see the Rhone (sideways view). I have some pictures I can send you, if you wish. Let me know. Oh, a friend who lives in Geneva very recently went there, and she was also very pleased.

We absolutely loved Arles. Have a great time!
