Are Naples & Sorrento possible as a day trip from Rome

Hi all, We have a hotel booked in Rome on points and would love to just do a day trip to Naples/Sorrento. Is that possible if we want to just do two things: 1. see Pompeii 2. bus trip on Amalfi coast. Thanks very much!

It is possible but a very long and tiring day. consider taking a bus tour from Rome. A guided bus tour is your best bet. If you decide to do on your own you could squeeze in Pompeii (allow 2 hrs) and Sorrento walking(allow 2 hrs) by train only.
These areas however are worth 3-5 days alone they are stunning beautiful and historic. Naples can be a bit gritty but very interesting so if you decide plan on it expect dodgy.

This question is frequently asked and answered in the Italy section. You might look there first. The short answer is - It depends. It can be done - very long day with a brief stop of maybe an hour or so at Pompeii. Pompeii can easily absorb a half day but you don't have time for that. The rest of the time you will be inside transportation look out. If that is what you want to do, then you can do it.

It's about 2.5 hrs to Pompeii from Rome, figure 3 hrs there, then another 30+ min to Sorrento, figure at least 3 hrs there (although it deserves days, not hours), then back to Rome is 3+ hrs. That's a 12-13 hr day at minimum.

Yvonda, To answer your questions: It IS possible to take a day trip from Rome to Pompeii, but that will be a LONG travel day, given the transportation times back and forth ("ballpark figure" for travel time - 3.5 hours each way). You should also have time for a brief "walkabout" in Sorrento. I doubt that it will be possible to fit a Bus trip in to the Amalfi Coast, as you won't have time with only one travel day (IMHO). It would be better if you could stay for a night or two in Sorrento. Happy travels!
