We are wondering if shorts for the girl are ok, and could the women wear capris? Skirts or pants better this time of year? thanks

Adults wearing shorts are generally not allowed into churches, duomos, and cathedrals; what I don't know for sure is whether they will make an exception for a 9-year old. I guess it doesn't matter if you can do without visiting churches.

Europeans just don't wear shorts very much, even when it's warm. I'd recommend capris and loose, gypsy-type skirts. Much more versatile and less likely to make you stand out as a tourist.
