Appropriate Clothing for France in August and September

What should a more mature woman wear in Paris in late August? Also Nice and Provence? Are capris and sandals admissible? What should I wear to the Monaco Casino during the afternoon and at night?

Obviously the clothing you want to wear is related to weather, among other things; and the weather in Paris in August is more likely than not to be significantly different from the weather in Nice--and since this will affect your clothing choices,

here's the best info I've found on what the weather is likely to be more than a week or two out

http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp

input your location and time period you'll be there and you'll get a neat summary of how hot/humid, etc it's likely to be based on the last 10 years of actual weather.

In addition to the most likely weather (above post), you may find this website useful re what a woman may want to consider wearing in Paris

thoughts on what a woman may want to wear in Paris

The advice appears to be from women who know, as opposed to those that have visited once or twice.

There are other links on that subject, on the Home page of the above link.

Thank you for the wonderful links and the good advice. I've been to Paris once, and I dressed in basics, my natural inclination. US stores are so full of color and prints, I get distracted, but I really don't feel comfortable in them. I still am curious about dressing to visit the Monaco Casino. Will basic black pants and top do, or do I need something a little more formal?

Re your question about the Monte Carlo casino, I couldn't afford to get farther in than the first room, where they even let peasants like me in (before 8pm).

What time of day/evening are you thinking of going into the Casino?

I'm not sure, but we probably won't get further than the first room either. It's possible that we could go on a Friday or Saturday night. Or Saturday afternoon.
It may depend on what I wear, as I really don't want to pack something that I'll only wear once.

The dress code for men after 8pm is enforced; more relaxed for women but I don't know what that means in terms of details.

It's definitely way different from Vegas, in terms of clothing:

This is all it says on the website about dress code, again, carefuly regulated for men but no details as to what's expected of women after 8pm:

DRESS CODE

"In the gaming rooms: sensible dress is required. No shorts or flip flops allowed. In the private rooms: after 8 p.m. every day, a jacket is required. No sport shoes allowed.
No military or religious uniforms allowed."

Thanks, that's the information that Rick gives. I really wish that Rick would be more explicit about women's clothing. He's been there and should have some idea what the women are wearing. Or hopefully a woman on his staff could be more helpful with women's wardrobes. Although 62, I really don't wish to look dowdy and try to look somewhat stylish (difficult with one small piece of luggage). So a lot of the "travel clothing" just doesn't look right when you are trying to blend with the locals. I usually try to bring a pair of sandal heels (carry them in the backpack and change into them if walking) - just to dress up a bit. But will these and a pair of dress slacks and a nice top be enough for the casino, or do I need a dress?

Yes, but the Monte Carlo Casino doesn't really fit in with Rick's marketing strategy, of where he thinks his readers are going to be spending most of their time. So he gives it short shrift, kind of as a point of honor (just my take on it).

I'll bet you can get specific advice on the femimine dress code over on the tripadvisor forum for Monaco, they have a forum specifically for Monaco--they're more high-brow over there than we are here :)

[edit] Yep, just as I thought, lots of advice on the casino dress code at the competition's travel forum
