Can you please tell me about this area of Switerland? It look gorgeous and I am consdering adding this to our trip to Germany in 2010. How many nights would you recommend? How easy is it to get to by train? Thanks for you help.

Wendy, having been there on two separate trips, I highly recommend Appenzell. Rick Steves' book on Switzerland goes into detail on what to see and you can also check out the town's website at www.Appenzell.ch The small town itself is a bit touristy but the outskirts, where we stay, is rolling green hills with the Alps in the background. The regional train takes you to this area. We really enjoy the Appenzell cheese factory that is close to the town. Very informative, interesting and free. Depending upon where you are coming from and how long it takes you to get to Appenzell, you may want to stay two nights. The town and cheese factory can be done in one day. We spent one night there, however, we were driving.

I second what Denise said. Further, if your trip happens to be in the spring, say around mid-April, the waterfalls in the area are wonderful. I should probably qualify this by saying you would want a car to get outside town.
