Hi,
While we never stayed in Appenzell but if you'll have a car, we did stay nearby in Treisenberg, Leichtenstein.

Hey, we stayed at Lydia's as well. Lovely family..very nice reasonable lodging. Be ware, cause we found the other places we tried very costly. Cute town, but we felt a few hours was more than enough and wished we had moved on. Have fun.
