Anything like Gimmelwald near Munich?

I spent 3 weeks in Europe a couple years ago and the highlight of the trip was my two days in Gimmelwald. I'm going back to Europe later this summer and will have 2-3 days to spend somewhere near Munich where I'll eventually fly home from.

My question is if there's anything similar to the Gimmelwald experience near Munich in the German/Austrian Alps?

Thanks,
-Aaron

Hi Aaron,
While I don't know of anything like Gimmelwald existing around Munich, one of our favorite villages is Mittenwald. About 2 hours from Munich, Mittenwald is a gorgeous village (small town) set among the Alps. If travelling by train, Mittenwald's station is just a 5 minute walk to the pedestrian zone. There is also a cable car, the Karwendelbahn that has beautiful vews from the top. Also, about a half hour away is the Zugspitze (Germany's highest mt. shared with Austria )trip from Garmisch.

I don't know if the Bavarian Alps have anything quite as isolated and rustic as Gimmelwald, but here are a few suggestions. Mittenwald (already mentioned), Grainau, the Partenkirchen section of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Scharnitz, or Oberammergau. Enjoy!

I don't think you will find anywhere else in the world exactly like Gimmelwald, but you might come close in the Oberallgäu. There are some delightful little villages up on the sides of the Illertal leading to Oberstdorf. Baad, at the upper end of the Kleinwalsertal is small and picturesque. The towns of Hindelang and Oberjoch are also quite nice.

However, what keeps Gimmelwald so special is it's inaccessibility. The places I mentioned are easily accessible by train and bus.
