We will be in Bayeux a few days near the end of June. Does anyone know of any scooter or bicycle rentals to head out to the D-Day beaches?
I googled bike rental in Bayeux and this website came up with a bike rental place in Bayeux: www.travel.yahoo.com/trip-view-328008-normandy_bayeux
yes i'm sure you can find a bike rental. the beach is pretty close to town. there is a narrow road leads to the US cemetery and the beach is right next to it you can hike down.
I'm sure that a bicycle could get you around but do be aware that the beaches are quite extensive - 50 miles or so from end to end, and the area covered inland is substantial. It took us several days to see what we wanted to and we had a car. I think on a bike it might be hard work. bonne chance....
You need to think this one out. The beaches are down on the beach, the roads are up on the bluffs. There's a lot of up and down involved. Depending on the tide, the beach is either shingle or wet sand - - you can't ride on either. To go to the cemetery, Ohama Beach, and back to Bayeux is a good thirty miles, at least. There's a million back roads between the freeway and the beaches. Very few have signs (except those leading from the freeway to the beaches, and then only at the freeway exit).
On top of Nigel's and Ed's post, the weather is always blustery there... Car. With a roof. Unless you're the Levi Leipheimer-type of bike rider...no.
