Nova re-ran their episode about the building of Gothic cathedrals. If you're an architecture or cathedral buff you are probably familiar with the principles involved, but it's still interesting. Lots of great photography of beautiful cathedrals.

Penny - thanks for sharing the link. The program was very informative and I enjoyed it very much!
While fairly over-dramatized, Ken Follet's "Pillars of the Earth" and its sequal "World Without End" are good reads for what it might have been like in a town building a cathedral. Life was hard then and to think people built these massive structures over several generations with limited technologies, it makes it easier to appreciate them.
Oh - thank you for the link!!!!! I set a reminder for the Nova cathedral episode, and then I was so tired I conked out and slept right through it! And now I can watch it! LOVE gothic cathedrals. Major love.
Thanks for the link. I really get into the Gothic and Romanesque church architecture. One of my favorite subjects and I enjoy visiting these really old, medieval churches in Frankfurt and surrounding towns.
I just saw this program (for the second time) and it was still fascinating. I've only see a couple of the cathedrals they featured, but hoping to see others on future trips.
Penny, you're the best! I'm hooking my laptop up to the TV right now! Thank you! I LOVE cathedrals (and I'm a carpenter, so I can't get enough of them).
Penny - thanks for this post! I recorded the episode (haven't watched it yet, but I saw it when it was on before). I too like Gothic cathedrals very much, and it amuses me that some people believe that people in the Middle Ages were backward and not as smart as people today. One of my grad school professors was fond of saying, "Yes, complete idiots built Chartres Cathedral." I'm actually reading "Pillars of the Earth" right now. It's pretty good so far.
Penny, I just finished watching it. Great show, even more fun to see them examining Cathedrals that I've visited. Thanks again for the link.
Well, I can't seem to watch it over here. Darn.
Jo,
I noticed that you could stream it free on Amazon (I'm a PrimeMember, so that might be why. Not sure what it is if you're not a member). It's worth a look.
Yea! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I kept thinking as I was watching it that there must be others from"helpline-land" who would be interested but who may have missed it. Now I'll have to read Pillars of the Earth; I've heard of it, but didn't realize what it was about. @ Sarah "it amuses me that some people believe that people in the Middle Ages were backward and not as smart as people today. One of my grad school professors was fond of saying, "Yes, complete idiots built Chartres Cathedral" That's what I was thinking:)
It is probably the music. Germany bans watching many videos due the artists or firms not paying the GEZ fee. (this is a licensing fee for music and TV) So, many of the TV film clips or YouTube videos are not available for me to watch.
As I read this post, we are in Paris. On our agenda today is to tour the Sainte-Chappelle cathedral. It's one of the best gothic cathedrals. I'm bookmarking this post so that I can watch the episode.
