After many hours searching Villefranche and Antibes here and on tripadvisor, both placs sound great. We would like a beach, walk to restaurants, shops in town. I would like to walk to beach from our hotel. Can someone give me a run down of how these towns compare...maybe with pros and cons? Thanks!
I can't compare not having been to Antibes. But we stayed in Nice back in 2003 and when we stopped off in Villefranche on the way back from Monaco on the train -- we wished we had stayed in Villefranche. Simply magical.
Both are very nice, I enjoyed both but favored Villefranche. Antibes is more lively, flatter but generally not as interesting architecturally. Villefranche is somewhat hilly with larger ruins to visit, quieter & gorgeous views.. You cannot go wrong w/ either as the train is convenient to get around.
I have stayed twice in Villefranche and just done a day trip to Antibes. I was not crazy about Antibes for some reason. Definitely larger than Villefranche and OK but I really love Villefranche. It's small and everything is is within walking distance - beach, shops, and restaurants. You can even walk over to Cap Ferrat and rent a beach chair on a really nice beach. It's easy to take the bus from Villefranche to Nice and other places up and down the coast. For what you are looking for, I'd choose Villefranche.
What you want describes Villefranche, not Antibes. I like Antibes better, but so what?
Villefranche it is! Now for a hotel hmmmmm. I will check out the four listed in RS book. Thanks for your help!!!!
Hi Stephanie,
y husband and I spent 4 days in Villefranche. We loved it. We stayed at Hotel de le Darse. They have reasonable rates, thin walls, and a great harbor view. It was truly a relaxing and refreshing stay. There are a number of great places to eat (La Caravelle was our favorite). I don't know much about Antibe, but I do know that you won't go wrong with Villefranche. Have a good trip.

Villefranche has my vote. We stayed at the Hotel la Flore, but if you want walking distance to the beach, you want the Welcome Hotel
My vote is for Villefranche as well. We enjoyed La Flore and it's more upscale but we really preferred Darse's location right on the water enjoying our wine at a much better price. We did take a day trip to Antibes
spent 2 nights in ant and 6 in ville fr. or rqather right outside in cap st jean. a wonderful place - ask for a seaview csalled hotel patricia (they hve a website) frank and joelle are the owners both speak english and are wonderfully helpful. the hpotelis a 20 minute walk to the town of vf - a rather lovely walk, as well as a short walk to cap ferrat st jean and belieu (a completely untouristy town. ville franche is closer by bus to nice and moncao than antibbes.
Thank you all so much for your posts! I think we have decided on Villefranche. I like the idea os a smaller romantic town. Now hotels...i better get going on this as we are going in August! Thanks again :)
Antibes. I have been to both, Antibes has so much history (look for stones in walls with Roman numbers upside down, the French tore down the Roman built city but reused the stones to build their own city) Napolean shopped in the market, great museums nice beach (don't leave anything on your towel while you swim it will be stolen) and as an artist I found many lovely little lanes to paint.
