Anniversary in Paris

Want to spend 7 days in October in Paris for our 30th wedding anniversary. We are seasoned Rick Steves travelers and do not speak French. Need help with determining best section of city for lodging. Have read all of Rick's advice but still cannot decide. Also, suggestions on best trips w/in France after Paris for additional 7 days. Have already been to Bayeux and Normandy.

We like the Rue Cler area. Some do and some do not. We stay at a variety of places... we like the Relais Bosquet or the Muguet. We are photographers and have been photographing in France for a long time. We love Burgundy...very close by car. Provence is nice, also. If you are interested in some neat places to stay, send me a PM. The vineyards are beautiful in early October and you can see people picking the grapes in Burgundy, Provence, the Var.

What a great way to spend your anniversary. I highly recommend renting an apartment for 7 days. It will save you a lot of money over a hotel and you will have room to spread out. We just rented an apartment in the Latin Quarter (5th arrondismont) over the holidays and we love it. The location was perfect, as it was on a small street with a metro station on each end. It was also withing walking distance of many things. If you would like specific detail you can PM me.

For your additional 7 days after Paris, consider the Loire Valley Chateaux Country, or Provence.

I second the vote for an apt for the week which affords much more privacy than a hotel -- but not room service. We like the St. Germain area -- stayed on Rue St. Andre des Arts (www.iloveparisapartments.com) Fantastic location -- so close to the St. Michel plaza; Notre Dame....which we liked for the free street entertainment on weekend evenings. So close to St. Chappelle. So close to the metro and the Seine. So close to good restaurants, etc., etc.
The Loire valley would be wonderful after Paris to see some of the lovely chateaux. Amboise is a very nice place to stay.
Have a wonderful anniversary trip!

Add my vote for an apartment in the Latin Quarter...either 5th or 6th arr. We rented a flat near Jussieu one yr. & loved watching the hustle & bustle of students. This August we've rented one in the 6th, near Saint-Sulpice. That's a great area for restaurants & sightseeing also. We love picking up pastries & having leisurely breakfasts in the apartment ~ no dressing for the dining room in the hotel. Buying bread, cheese, wine, & produce from the local markets is a wonderful way to mingle with the locals. Just learn a few basic tourist-French phrases for politeness' sake & you'll do fine. But it's even more fun if you learn a little more of the language from CD's or phrase books. (Pantomime helps also!) Then after Paris, how about hopping the TGV to Nice?!

I was just in Paris in December and we rented an apartment in the Marais. It was a great area of town. I recommend the aprtment if you are going to stay that long. It gives you more space and a more authentic feel.
