Will be in Cadaques for several days April 19th and 20th, thought about checking out Andorra. Is the drive winding and slow? Is there much to see there? I goggled Andorra and didn't find much info. Thanks!
A number of years ago we decided to drive up to Andorra as we were fairly close by, in France. We were told it would be an "arduous" drive, but did not find it so. "Worth the drive?" Such a subjective question. We spent about an hour or two in La Vella and if you like to shop, that's what this place is all about, out of ski season. After seeing Andorra, I felt the same way as I had after being to Lithuania . . . "Well, I don't have to ever go there again."
Agree completely with Norma's assessment. It's winding, but not overly so....but it is relatively slow, especially if there's traffic. From Cadaques, unfortunately, it's probably going to take you at least 3 1/2 hours each way. If you're looking for another day drip, how about Carcassonne, a great medieval city about 2 hours away.
Andorra is basically a strip mall/tax haven surrounded by countryside which would make Heidi proud. While there are outdoor activities year-round, I can't really see any reason to go there except to cross it off of one's "trip list". (As a curiosity, it should be noted that Andorra retains part of its medieval penal code, and that people accused of murder there have the right to call the victim to declare.)
Norm is right, there are better ways to spend a day in northern Spain -- Besalú is another fabulous medieval town, and closer than Carcasonne.
We drove into Andorra and stayed over night up in a village during the summer. We went right off the 'beaten' track and went walking in the mountains - it was fantastic. We didn't even stop in the main city/town area. We loved it. In the area we were in there were huge sculptures - quite remarkable really.
