I believe this is the monastery/brewery we visited when we stayed in Munich about 10 years ago. It was a one hour train ride from Munich center, then either an uphill walk through the woods or a shuttle bus.

I went to Andechs in 2007. I took the S-Bahn to Herrsching and the bus from there to the monastery. The bus ride was pretty short, and I saw what looked like people walking to the monastery. It looks like hiking to Andechs from Herrsching is a real possibility; I would not advise hiking from Munich. According to Google maps, if you go on foot via Waldstrasse, which looks like a footpath, the hike is just over 2 mi.

Done it five or six times. Even though it's kind of out of the way, it's a nice day out in the countryside. Takes an hour to walk, more or less, and people of average fitness will have no problems. It's the S-8 to end station Herrsching. Walk Bahnhofstraße towards the east / away from the S-Bahn station + train tracks (if you find the person-sized tunnel under the tracks, you can walk a few blocks to the Ammersee which is nice too, but the opposite direction from your goal) until it becomes Luitpoldstraße. A couple blocks later, make a right onto Kientalstraße and follow it eventually into the forested Kien Valley. At first, signage seems a bit sporadic. But once the houses run out and the asphalt street ends, signs will get you the rest of the way. The 100+ steps to the hilltop at the end of the walk will ensure you're a little thirsty, which will come in handy. A Maß was still under 6€ last time I was there; good deal. Enjoy ~

I know it's going to sound silly, but try the potato salad. I have dreams about the potato salad at Andechs.

I was looking to see if there are any accommodations in the area. Most are 3-6 miles away, and hotel and B&B prices are really high.
It's almost enough to go by car and take a designated driver with you.

I stayed at the Hotel garni Zur Post which is just down the hill from the monestary. The double was 90EUR per night, which is not bad for being within walking distance. The hotel was connected to the family meat shop that sold some great venison sausage!

Veilen Dank Rob D!......for the directions...my thinking exactly...working up a good thirst...I have found all the streets you mention on Mapquest...I see that Kientalstraße on the map stops...so I am guessing there is a footpath in the forrest with signage once the street runs out?

I believe most people "walk" to Andech's because they are on a pilgrimage. It's not called "the holy mount" for nothing. The beer and potato salad are just earthly bonuses. (Kidding aside, Andechs is a ways from Munich, and walking the entire way would be quite a trip.)

Mark, yes, that's exactly correct. Once you find Kientalstraße, you're set... enjoy the walk through the "Enchanted Mysterious Forest" as we call it :)
