Ancient Egyptian Museums

I am a huge fan of Ancient Egypt, and I would love to explore some Egyptian museums while I'm in Europe. The only big collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts that I'm aware of is in the Louvre. Do any of you know of any other big collections?

And to top off the Rosetta stone....which was deciphred in France.... M. Jean-François Champollion - the French do try to ignore Young's involvement...the British Museum is free...everyday.

However, the Louvre has the most incredible displays of the Book of the Dead.

Athens also has a great collection at the National Archaeological Museum. It is a new collection that opened last week. I am going this next week and will update my thoughts.

Thank you both for your replies! I actually have the British Museum on my London itinerary, and other than the Rosetta Stone, I had no idea that it had so many Egyptian artifacts. Jona, I took down the name of the Athens museum. Unfortunately I will not be visiting Athens next summer, but I will check it out when I finally do make it to Greece!

Yes! The British Museum: the Rosetta Stone, Head of Ramesses II and a few thousand more things Egyptian. This Museum also chronicles the rise and fall of Greek civilization (the Parthenon Marble friezes, etc) and Assyrian civilization.

Don't miss Berlin's Egyptian Museum/Altes Museum the home of the bust of Queen Nefertiti. The Pergamon Museum also in Berlin is wonderful for Greek artifacts. We were there in April and both were great! I haven't been there but there's an Egyptian Museum in Turin that's supposed to be great. I'm a docent for a small antiquities museum in Atlanta called the Michael C. Carlos Museum and we have a nice collection of Egyptian artifacts. The museum in hosting the King Tut Exhibit here in November!

Caroline -

You mentioned museums - but I also thought it would be worth adding to not miss the Obelisk that is at Place de Concorde.

You can find random Egyptian artifacts on the streets of Paris. There is an Egyptian pharaoh outside Vanaeu Metro (line 10) .
