You can also travel Amsterdam-Frankfurt flughafen (airport)-Stuttgart-Vienna with the Stuttgart-Vienna leg being on a EuroNight train. You would leave Amsterdam at 16:34 and arrive in Vienna at 06:40. See the timetables at www.bahn.de. After you get summary timetables for Amsterdam-Vienna, click on the arrow to the left of each route to see the connecting points.

City Nightline operates a direct night train, but I believe it only operates on the weekends. Departs Centraal Station 5pm, arrives in Vienna at 9am. Midweek you will have to take an ICE train to Frankfurt and connect to the City Nightline from there. You can check schedules, and print tickets at home at www.citynightline.ch

From BAHN.DE, Second class CNL couchette (4 berth) is costing about 200 Euros for 2 from Frankfurt to Vienna. Am I doing it right? Are they usually that expensive? At the same time I am looking at raileurope.com, second class CNL couchette (6 berth) is costing about 120 Euros for two. raileurope.com is not providing an option of selecting 4 berth one. Is is too crowded to travel in a 6 berth couchette?

Kavita,

Will you have a railpass? If so, the in-Europe price for the supplement for a bunk in a 6-person couchette is €19 and for a bunk in a 4-person couchette it is €29. Avoid Rail Europe and buy the supplement by phoning the German Rail call centre. Dial 011 (US international access code) + 49 (country code for Germany) + 1805 - 996633. I believe I gave you some of this information in a PM a few days ago, right?

If you're buying point-to-point tickets, the Bahn site shows a standard fare of €141.20 for a bunk in a 6-person couchette and €151.20 for a bunk in a 4-person couchette. If any of the Europa-Spezial Oesterreich fares are still available, the cost is €59 for a 6-person couchette and €69 for a 4-person couchette. Book online on the Bahn site.

Kavita, Don't wait til you're there. Night trains book up months in advance. I was able to book by calling. I don't remember if I got a german recording....did you try holding or press 0 for operator. I do remember that when I got someone on the phone I asked for English, and they then transfered me to someone who spoke English.
