Amsterdam to Bacharach to Salzberg

Help! We are traveling throughout Europe next October using the rail system. I have figured out most of the connections and trains we need to take however how in the world do we get from Amsterdam to Bacharach, Germany and from there to Salzberg, Austria. (We are staying two nights in each city). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

Amy, As Lee mentioned, those trips are all very easy by rail. From Amsterdam to Bacharach, I'd use the train with one change in Köln (time 5H:26M). Bacharach is a very small station (with no staff - closed a few years ago for "budget reasons"). You'll need to watch your time so that you disembark. Depending on which Hotel you're staying in, you should be able to walk from the station (even with luggage - it's an easy walk to most Hotels - which Hotel are you considering?). As there are no rail staff in Bacharach, the only option for tickets is via automated Kiosk. The trip from Bacharch to Munich is also very easy. I'd use the train with one change in Mainz (time 5H:09M). The trip from Munich to Salzburg is exceptionally easy - as short as 1H:42M via direct train. If you need an rail information or tickets while in Munich (day trips or whatever), stop by the EurAide office in the Munich station. They have English-speaking staff and are very helpful! They moved their office to another location in the station a few years ago, but their web site provides a clear diagram with the location. Happy travels!

You can find these connections on the German Rail website. There are connections, including ICEs from Amsterdam to Koblenz via Köln (Cologne). From Koblenz to Bacharach would be by regional train up the Rhein. Bacharach to Salzburg would probably be by another regional train to Mainz (maybe Bingen). From Mainz or Bingen there are several main lines to Munich, either via Frankfurt (Main) or Mannheim. There might be changes of trains in Frankfurt or Mannheim. There is a rail line from Munich to Salzburg.

The link I provided above is to the German Rail Query page. That page gives you complete options for your search, in English. Unfortunately the page mentioned by Neko, although it will get you eventually to the page I referenced, will not get you there initially. I recommend you save time and use the link I provided.

Thanks this has been very helpful info. We are staying at Pension Lettie in Bacharach which I believe is within walking distance.

Amy, Pension Lettie is indeed within easy walking distance from the station. It's a short walk down the main street and then a right turn for about half a block and you'll be there. Lettie will provide a choice between a "German breakfast" and an "American breakfast" with Waffles. I'd suggest the Waffles! You won't be hungry after breakfast! Lettie is a wonderful host, and I think you'll enjoy your time there. Cheers!

As Lee mentioned, you can connect through Koln. I would advise an early morning train out of Amsterdam plan a few hours in Koln for a visit to the Dom and old center, and a lunch that includes a taste of Kolsch (the local style of brew). Your connection from Koblenz into Bacharach will be a local train (regional) because they stop at the smaller stations. When riding a regional, be ready to get off at your stop. They stop for less than a minute; if you're not ready to hop off, you'll miss your stop. We stayed at the Burg Stahleck, a castle turned hostel, in Bacharach. It's one of the best hostels I've stayed in but is always booked, so reserve ahead. Pensions too are always a good choice in Germany. In my experience the quality of room is consistently good. I've stayed in a Pension in Bacharach but can't recall the name (I'm pretty sure it was on Rick's recommended list). Rick's self-guided walk in Bacharach is also worthwhile.
