Any comments on the costs of taxis in Amsterdam? The trams seem a bit expensive even by European standards. Are cabs also a bit pricey? For example, how much would a taxi cost to go from the Central Station to the Rijksmuseum?
can't really answer the taxi question, however, have you checked out the "I Amsterdam pass at the tourist office? We paid 48E for a 3 day pass which included trams and most of the major museums and atractions. It's been 4+ years since I took a taxi from Centraal, however, I do remember we had to take a goofy route as there where several one way and/or restricted roads that kept him from going directly.
Taxi rates here: http://wikitravel.org/en/Amsterdam#Get_around If you purchase an Iamsterdam card and visit three covered attractions per day, you essentially get a free unlimited transit card out of it.
We paid 25euros for a 5 minutes drive from Train Station to our Hotel and it was about 5 minutes ride.
I call that a ripp off!!
Taxi's are expensive, but at least the last time I used them years ago, they were professional. Since then I learned how easy the trams were to use.
Can't help with taxis. I took one from my hotel on Prinsengrach to the airport & don't remember it being out of sight. However if you're able, that distance is walkable and it's thru a great area with lots of canals & wonderful architecture. You could also take the tram for part of it & walk the rest.
