Amsterdam-Rothenburg-Munich

My husband and I are traveling to Amsterdam and will stay there for a couple of nights.
We then plan to take a train from Amsterdam to Rothenburg and spend one night there. Is this too much travel in one day? Is it better that we spend a night in Frankfurt before going to Rothenburg?
After one night in Rothenburg we would like to see Neuschwanstein before heading to Munich. Is it better to spend a night close to the castles?
We'll be spending three nights in Munich.

Amsterdam-Munich-Rothenburg might be your easier transportation route and sequence of cities to visit, depending on the rest of your itinerary. At bahn.de I looked 92 days ahead (maximum allowed) to find your cheapest priced non-stop overnight train between Amsterdam and Munich. Book them early as possible for the best prices. You would depart Amsterdam at 20:31 and arrive in Munich at 07:16. Maybe do your Munich days and vicinity trips first and then go to Rothenburg afterwards. Per person in an economy double sleeper cabin is 99 Euro booked far ahead. Everyone should experience the overnight European trains, I like them a lot and they maximize your sightseeing time. From Munich, Rothenburg is approx. 3 hours by train. The idea of making a stop on the scenic part of the Rhine (below Koln) by Steve is a good one if you have the time. It's a beautiful area with plenty to see and explore.

The same night train fare from Amsterdam to Munich would also be available to Amsterdam-Hannover-Würzburg-Steinach-Rothenburg. You'd have to get off of the night train in 4 AM in the morning in Stuttgart, but the rest of your travel to Rothenburg would be covered on that fare. That trip would take about 13 hours. Then, after Rothenburg, you could go to Munich using a Bayern-Ticket (€28 for both of you).

There are also day train connections that make the trip to Rothenburg in 7-8 hours via Hannover or Frankfurt to Würzburg. If you leave Amsterdam before 11 AM, you could be in Rothenburg by 6 PM. You can also get reduced fare tickets all the way on these connections.

Added: It might be easier to go directly from Rothenburg to Munich and do Füssen and the castles as a day trip from Munich. For information about getting to the castles from Munich, see here.

Thank you all for the very helpful information! We had two nights from the time we leave Amsterdam until we need to arrive in Munich. The Rhine area sounds like a good idea. I will look into Bacharach and maybe we can leave Amsterdam one night earlier to stay two nights along the Rhine and then stay one night in Rotherburg before we head to Munich.
Once in Munich we could do the castles as a day trip.
How does this sound for a plan?
