I will be in Amsterdam by myself for 2 days. I would like to do Rick's walking tour of the red light district. Is it safe for a woman to do this by herself?
Click here for prior discussions of that in the last year.
Yeah, it's safe. There are actually regular apartments above most of the windows, where regular folks live, including families with young children. So you'll see lots of locals transiting the area going about their everyday lives. There is also a heavy police presence. There will also be lots of other tourists, attracting pickpockets, so wear your money belt.
We were there last Fall, having been there as well in 2000 and 2004. I will say that the area has cleaned up considerably from the old days and safety shoukd not be an issue. You can also go late afternoon, catching a little flavor of the area, but adding some measure of safety.
Use the same precautions as you would anywhere and you will be fine. I would stay away at night but that is mainly because the rowdy obnoxious drunk stag parties.
Thanks for the advice everyone...sounds like I should do it!
