I will be traveling to Amsterdam at the beginning of May for a week then heading to Paris via train. I was thinking of a stopping off somewhere for 1 day/night. I was thinking Brussels, but I've been there before. Can anyone suggest a good place to stop for one night? Maybe a charming village in France? Also, any recommendation on cheapest way to get from Amsterdam to Paris? Thanks!
Maastricht! It's in the guide books and gets nice reviews.
I'm kinda interested in this too. I need to find a cheap way to get from amsterdam to paris via train. (Thalys is expensive just for reservations!)
Us too. Arriving in Amsterdam 14 Jun. We were there last year, loved it. Then going to Paris for probably five days, and then heading in the direction of Italy. Train travel is not cheap unless you know how to do it. We are still figuring that out.

Eurolines.com bus. Cheap way to get from Amsterdam to Paris. Be careful. Just a FYI. The bus was stopped in France and a drug dog came aboard and sniffed to his hearts content.
Brugges is a great stop between the two cities. It is well described in guidebooks, so you can decide if it is the kind of place you'd like to see. Given the actual cost of being in Europe, and the time limits most of us enjoy on our vacations, trains are really a very good value, even if they are not the "cheapest."
Do you have a Eurail? My friends and I did a weekend trip from Paris to Amsterdam with stops in Lille and Bruges, and the only reservation we made was for the TGV from Paris to Lille. The rest of the trains were local trains, but it didn't take that much longer than what Thalys would've taken. Bruges is a lovely city (and has great chocolatiers and mussels!). The other places that we could've gone to were Brussels and Antwerp.
Train travel in Europe can be very inexpensive if you can buy your tickets well in advance over the Internet. Tickets generally go on sale 90 days in advance of, and if you can buy them then, you can get special nonrefundable tickets that are inexpensive.
