Amsterdam>Munich

I am working on finishing up my route and was thinking about possibly a stop on the way from Amsterdam to Munich? We are only in Munich one night, we're mainly going to Fussen and to see the castles and such. Flying, i've been told, from AMS to Munich can be difficult and expensive, so I figure why not take the train, spend a night somewhere, head to Munich, then its off to Fussen.

Any suggestions on a cool place to stay. We'd love to stay in the forest or a small mountain like town. A place really to relax after 3 nights in AMS. Ideal situation would be a reasonably priced room, and somewhere to enjoy some drinks and a decent meal w/out spending 100EURO a head.

Koln is a good stop between A'dam and Munich. It's a good city with plenty to see. Bonn is a great little city too, the former Capital of West Germany. If you prefer, you could do a night on the Rhine in Bacharach, St. Goar or some of the other small towns, catch a one hour cruise ride between the two and roam Rheinfels castle ruins. They have a great castle turned hostel there (Burg Stahleck?), very clean and well run - you need reservations because it seems to be always full.
