Hi, I'm looking to rent an apartment for our 3 nights stay in Amsterdam and wondering if people can recommend whether Nieuwe Amstelstraat (1011) or Weteringstraat (1017) area is a better area to stay for first time visit. Prices are about the same and both areas surround by different tourist attractions... Or if people have other suggestions, that'd be greatly appreciated. Jenny
I'm not sure where the first apartment is, but when I put Weteringstraat into Google Maps, I see it's right in the southern canal belt. This is a wonderful location. When I tried to find the first apartment, I get different locations each time I look. "Nieuwe" means "New," so it's usually followed by something else - are you missing part of the street name? I see from a postal code map that 1011 is the Red Light District and some areas east of this (I think - the map is quite sketchy). If I'm right and this is the apartment's location, it's not nearly as convenient as the southern canal belt.
My favorite neighborhood is the Jordaan - pretty quiet and safe (the only place I felt a little uneasy in the city was in the red-light district at night). You could search for apartments there. The Jordaan is close to Centraal Station, where you can catch trams and little blue buses (a 2-hour pass for the buses cost 1 euro as of two years ago) to all parts of the city. Amsterdam is very walkable, too.
