I know it's not much, and by no fault of ours, we got stuck w/very very little time in Amsterdam.
What do you think are the "must-sees"? What would you do if you only had one and one half days?
Thanks!

Do the things in Rick's "Amsterdam in One Day" list, on p. 27 of my Amsterdam/Bruges/Brussells 2006 edition. Then if I had extra time, start working on his Amsterdam in 2 days list.
Thanks, I do have this book.
Just wondering if everyone agreed with those or maybe had other suggestions.
Rick's guidebook has most everything covered, but a good museum not listed is the Foam photography Museum (www.foam.nl). A week before you arrive check out www.amsterdamweekly.nl it lists all the temporary exhibits, events, and show going on throughout the city.
I'm not a huge fan of A'dam. A day and 1/2 is more than I would plan. The canal tour is enjoyable, from there it depends largely on your priorities.
IMO if you are going to other countries, you can skip the museums. A'dams museums are okay but you will see much better museums elsewhere.
I saw a good website that had the best self-guided city walks of Amsterdam (and other cities). Most of the walks were one to two miles with a narrative on a dozen or so points of interest. Check it out at http://www.eatndrink.com/, click on the "Best Walks of Europe(free)" tab in the top middle of the screen. It has choices from historical highlights to the Red Light district.
I agree with Brad...am not a big fan of Amsterdam either. Have been twice and the last time (in 2000) I thought the city had really run-down from earlier visit. A canal tour is nice and if I could only go to one place it would be the Van Gogh Museum. Sensational and not that big so you can see everything in a relatively short time. Rijksmuseum
is intersting but there is a fabulous collection of Rembrandts and other Dutch painters at the Louvre (not to be missed).
Hi! I think Amsterdam is a rather charming city to walk around in. We also enjoyed the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House and the Heineken Brewery (very different from any other brewery tour I've been on). The Red Light District is an experience. If you get tired of Amsterdam you could always take the train to Delft. It is the very quaint, picturesque town of Johannes Vermeer. Enjoy!
I didn't know the Heini was there! Excellent suggestions!
Thanks, everyone!
