If I want to go to the Van Gogh and Rijks Museum in the S.W. section and the Jewish sites and Dutch Resistance Museum in the S.E. section, is it ok to stay so far out from the Damrak center of the city as in the Leidseplein area (at the Marriott Hotel on Stadhouderskade)? I can't walk far and will need the trams and water buses. Also, I don't want a noisy area, as I'm almost a Sr. citizen. (Not square, just tired after a long day.)
The Leidseplein area isn't "far out" at all. The Van Gough/Rijks is a very short walk away, and the Jewish Quarter is also a short tram ride away. Leidseplein isn't a quiet area though, it's a very popular for it's nightlife among tourists and locals alike. Though I'm sure the Marriott is very well sound proofed. map of the area
I almost always stay in the general Leidseplein when in Amsterdam - about 15 trips. For the past 4 or 5 years I have been staying the Hotel Piet Hein across from Vondel Park. Their service is excellent, the rooms are larger than usual for Amsterdam, and it is lierally a 5 to 7 minute walk from the Van Gogh museum.
