Amsterdam Hostels

I am backpacking Europe this summer and am starting in Amsterdam. I will be staying in hostels. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a hostel? I am looking in the $30 a night range, and would prefer to have a room with females only. Thanks!

There is Hostelle. The entire hostel is female-only, but it is slightly outside the city center so you would be needing to take public transit (it's close to the Metro stop). More central would be Shelter Jordaan and Stayokay Vondelpark, and both have female dorm rooms. Check hostelworld.com for reviews from previous guests. The multi-bed dorms are a bit more than $30 USD per night, especially on weekends (Shelter Jordaan has an 18-bed dorm that runs $30 during the week and is $40/night on weekends - but if you don't want to share a room with 17 other people, the price for a 4 bed dorm increases to about $50/night on weekends). Amsterdam is not a cheap place for lodging and 23 Euros a night is likely to get you someplace a little skanky - like a party hostel over near Amsterdam Centraal or the Red Light District. Probably not what you are looking for - so check the reviews carefully and consider increasing your nightly budget a bit if location plays any factor in your final decision. If you don't mind co-ed dorms, CocoMama is in a great location to get around to lots of sights, restaurants and markets. But you'd have to book a private room if you aren't up to sleeping in a mixed-gender dorm.
