I'm looking for accommodations in Amsterdam next May (early May)and I have a question regarding renting a boat house for 4 people (two couples). Is staying on the canal a good idea? Does boat traffic keep you up? Is there a foul odor coming from the canal? Will it be too cold this time of year? Please share your experiences so that I may make an informed decision. Thanks in advance!!

We rented a houseboat for one week in mid April 2006 on Prinsengracht and really enjoyed it. The temp dropped to the mid 40's at night but it should be warmer for you. Minimal wake from passing boats so it was never an issue and we never smelled a thing. It was really a great experience. Sitting on the deck enjoying a beer, waving to the passing tour boats, meeting folks strolling by...talk about a great conversation starter. We liked it so much we did the houseboat thing two years ago in Paris. Have a great time!
