I've read that there are no fees for withdrawing money from ATM machines in Amsterdam . . . can anyone confirm this?

Not from bank owned ATMs. Privately owned ATMs, the sort that you might find on convenience stores etc. might. If they do charge they must, by law, tell you before you are charged and give you a chance to cancel the transaction.
That's all obviously at the ATM end, your home bank will quite likely charge you a fee.

My experience is the same as Peter's. No fees when using machines owned by a bank. FYI, you won't be able to use your debit card at the automatic ticket machines at any of the train stations. They only accept European cards with smart chips; but no problems using ATM machines.
