We arrive at AMS on a Thursday at 9 am, and leave on a cruise on Saturday afternoon. We will be staying at the Novotel. I want to spend Friday in The Hague touring the International Court and the EScher Museum. I am looking for advice about local transportation in Amsterdam and also getting to and around The Hague. Should we look for some sort of transportation package in AMS, or just pay for trams and trains as we need them? Thanks. Em
In both cities you will be using mostly trams to get around. Amsterdam transit authority (GVB) has an unlimited transit pass available. You can purchase them at the GVB office across the tram tracks outside of Centraal Station. I'm not certain if the equivalent type pass is available in the Hague. There are direct trains from the airport to the Hague every ten minutes, journey time 10 minutes. Between Amsterdam Central there are also train every 10 minutes or so; journey time is 45 minutes. No reservations are required, simply purchase your tickets at the station on the day of your journey.
Hi Emily. I'll try to tackle the getting around The Hague part. I've been researching this for our upcoming trip, and this is what I've come up with so far. The Hague's version of GVB is the HTM ( here's a link to their website, some in English, lots in Dutch). From what I can tell, you can get a daily transit pass for The Hague area, but you have to have an anonymous OV chipkaart on which to load the pass (I believe you can also load a GVB daily pass onto the same card.) The OV chipkaart costs 7.50 euro, plus the costs of whatever passes you load onto it (an HTM one day pass is 7 euro). I hope this is helpful, and that you have a great trip!
