Amsterdam accomodations

I'm not having a lot of luck with Amersterdam lodging this summer. It seems to be more expensive than London or Berlin. Anyone know of good safe lodging in the canal area for close to 70 euros/night or am I dream. Traveling with spouse so we'll want private room though we don't mind a shared bathroom. Also interested in apartments. I just haven't seem much posted on this on this site. Thanks. Will only be there 2 nights in August.

Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities in the world now... especially if you want to stay in the canal area. We stay in the Hotel Fita which is neat, but way over 70 euros. Try the Owl hotel. It just may fit the bill.

James beat me to it, but I have to also recommend looking at TripAdvisor Netherlands and reading up on the Bidding on 4 & 5*. The places that I have stayed at in the past are a lot higher this year but people still seem to be getting rooms for $70-75 US dollars on Priceline. I have never tried it, but the Amsterdam regulars have never led me astray with any of their recommendations. They are a very helpful group of people. One of them, RonaldC, even went and made reservations for my son and I on a St Nicholas boat cruise so that we would be sure to have a place the night we arrived.

Thanks very much. I will try these options. We're flexible about accommodations but our dates are fixed unfortunately. Having never been to Amsterdam, I just didn't realize it was so much more expensive than London where we easily found an apartment with a small kitchen for about 55 pounds.

Have you checked tripadvisor.com? It has a selection of hotels, with reviews, in every price range. It also has a map-it feature so you can see where the hotels are located.

My family stayed at Vondelpark Hostel, not a private room though. It was located near the museums but easy to get around from there.

On two separate occasions, for two different weekends for December 2010, I paid $85.00 ($71 Priceline bid plus $14 a night room tax). $85.00 is currently around 63 EUR, a great price for a well located (I chose the museum district) 4 star hotel in Amsterdam (there are nearby canals everywhere). I suspect that I could have gotten it even cheaper, but was using free Priceline voucher coupons and my minimum bid had to be $71.00, which I won on the first attempt. In large expensive European cities,Priceline is a great way to travel luxuriously and cheaply.
