american ww2 cemeterary (normandy)

i am heading to europe for 2 weeks next year and i am must make a trek out to the cemetary to pay respects to my grandfather. i am doing a budget trip. i want to train out there early and get home by 8 or so.
so i have a few questions.

does anyone know the best stop to get off of?

are the taxis expensive to get from the train station to the american cemetary or should i take a bus(not a bus tour)

will my railpass work on this train ride?

i only want to see the american one due to time restrictions and personal reasons. i am skipping versailles to do this and know it will be well worth it.

Take the train to Bayeux (from Paris? you didn't say). If from Paris it's a bit over 2 hours, but add the time to get to the station, wait for train, etc.

Then get from the Bayeux train station to the Bayeux bus station (don't know how to do that, you could go to viamichelin.com and figure it out).

Here's the Normandy bus route map

http://www.busverts.fr/_hiver/plan.asp

Note that I have not done this by bus. But I'm going to go ahead and describe what I think might be a way to get from Bayeux to the American Cemetery. I said "think", this is theory. If anyone here has actually done it, please help us out.

Okay, back to the bus map. You're at the Bayeux bus station. (BTW, bus website is in French, no English version).

Click on the upper left of the map, so that you get a larger version that shows Bayeux and area northwest of Bayeux.

Look for the green route on the map, it says #70. You can see it goes northwest from Bayeux. One of the stops on the #70 route is Colleville. The American Cemetery is about 1.25 miles by road north of the center of the town/village of Colleville-sur-Mer, I assume the Colleville stop on the bus map lets you off in the town of Colleville-sur-Mer.

If you go by bus, I guess you have to walk the last 1 and 1/4 mile.

Which raises the subject of taxi (see post below).

Adding to my 1st post:

Googlemap says it's 11 miles one way Bayeux to Colleville-sur-Mer. I don't know what the taxi fare would be. But that might be your best bet, since time is a factor for you. At least it would be faster and more certain than trying it by bus, and would save you the walk from the village to the Cemetery.

Conor, question for You: You say train but you don't say where you would be starting the train trip. If Paris, or wherever, use this train schedule website

to see your choices of schedules/times/etc

train to Bayeux is a little over 2 hours, add for time getting to the station, waiting for the train, etc.

Kent thanks for all the information.

I would be taking the train from Paris(lazare station i believe). I did see the train schedule thanks. The taxi looks like a great option. This is a trip i have been planning for quite some time and now getting all the logistics out of the way will be the tough part.

Also in regards to the train, one of my travel days on the eurorail pass should work right? I wouldnt need to purchas a seperate fair?
