Will my American Express credit card be accepted at the following locations: CDG counters to purchase RER tickets and Museum Passes Le Cinq restaurant
Don't think they take Amex at the RER or for the Museum passes-do not know about the restaurant. MY experience is Visa or MC rule in the EU outside of chain hotels, rental cars, and restaurants.
I think I'd go along with Jerry, it seems I seldom use an AmEx in europe, but never really thought about it since the more frequently used are on top of my stack.
Le Cinq accepts Amex (as of 3 weeks ago). But Jerry is correct; you'd be well-advised to bring along a Visa or Mastercard as well. These are widely accepted in Europe and Amex is not.
One place you can use AmEx is at the Velib bike rental kiosks: http://wikitravel.org/en/Paris#Get_around
The VISA and MasterCard are cards of choice in Europe. AE will be accept at higher end establishments especially five star hotels and fine restaurants but for the most part it is a dead card. Also believe that the currency conversion fees on AE are high. You would be better served with VISA or MasterCard.
I always offered my American Express first. Sometimes they accepted it and sometimes not. Same for my Visa. Even tollways in France usually accepted one, but not the other. Makes sure you have a debit card.
We use AE, almost exclusively, and have never had a problem purchasing rail tickets or museum passes. We do carry V or MC as a backup but seldom use them.
I recall that we used AmEx to pay tolls on the road in France.
