My husband and I are planning to go to Italy in late September. We can't decide how we want to go from the mainland (Naples/Amalfi area)to Sicily: by ferry(new experience), by rail (most scenic), fly with Ryanair(fastest and cheapest).
Any suggestions?
We flew from Catania, Sicily to Naples, just the reverse via Air One. We had no problems, but we were short to time so we flew and it was very inexepensive as well. If you have the time, I would imagine you would see quite a bit. I had heard it is about a 7-8 hour drive to where we wanted to go. Flying was the best option for us. You could also include rail to your list.
I would fly if I were you.
I took the overnight ferry a couple of years ago. The trip over to Sicily was fine but the return trip from Messina involved wandering through what appeared to be fairly dangerous areas of the port trying to find a trailer where ship departures were managed, a canceled ferry, and re-booking at midnight on another ship - all having to be done with my limited Italian as no one spoke any English. All announcements on the ferry were only in Italian and in hindsight I could have been in a bit of trouble if something had gone wrong on the journey as I wouldn't have been able to follow instructions. I traveled 8 weeks in Italy, mostly solo, and this was the only time I was concerned for my safety.
Flying is quicker and probably safer.
We made the same trip a few years ago by rail. It is a scenic trip, and it also provided a relaxing, comfortable day off from sight-seeing. Everyone in our compartment had a packed lunch, and this added to the holiday feel of the trip.
