Alternative to Santiago

We're planning a 3 week trip to Spain in the fall, following Rick's itinerary, ..... until Santiago. After researching how far away it is, how long it's going to take us to get there and the fact that the only real attraction is the church and pilgrims, we've decided to skip it and go from Salamanca directly to San Sebastián. As a result, we have 2 extra days to spend somewhere else. Can anyone give us suggestions?

We love Santiago - if it were me, I'd skip San Sebastian and spend time in Santiago. Santiago is more than pilgrims...the cathedral is beautiful, the restaurants great and Hotel Costa Vella was one of our all-time favorite hotels.

San Sebastian has some fun tapas restaurants and a beach but beyond that there's not so much to see and do.

It depends on how it fits in with the rest of your itinerary and the time of year that you're going - knowing more about your other destinations would be helpful!

Bilbao is an easy bus or train ride from San Sebastian. It is an old industrial city turned modern trade and convention centre, with two fine art museums (yes there is more than just the spectacular Guggenheim), a history of anti-Franco, pro-Basque activism, and plenty of fine dining. Its fairly new international airport provides connections to elsewhere. The pro soccer team is moderately competitive too.
