Going the Alsace and Lorraine region with an infant. My husband wants to renta an apartment for the week and just rent a car to go on day trips to other towns. Is Strasbourg the best base or is there another city I should look into? I've only found an apartment in Strasbourg that is big enough and affordable. Any ideas/suggestions would be great!
Kate, You did well to choose Strasbourg from which to visit Alsace by car or train. That would be my choice too, did something similar in 1999 by staying in one of the numerous 2 star hotels near the train station. From there it's about 25 mins. to the centre ville/Innenstadt. Aside from going to Colmar, go to a smaller place too...Obernai. If you're interested in Prussian war history, with that rental car, you can go to Gravalotte outside of Metz, very poignant cemetery and museum too. Took the bus, then walked back, since I didn't have a rental car.
Kate, I was in that area a few months ago, and my suggestion would be to consider staying in Colmar rather than Strasbourg (especially if you'll be using a rental car). While apartments may be more plentiful in Strasbourg, it's a much larger city and parking especially could be a problem. I really enjoyed my stay in Colmar and would definitely like to return. What time of year will you be travelling there?
I agree with Ken! We loved Colmar and found it more like home.
